Philadelphia has a long and proud history of professional sports teams. Of late, Philadelphia teams have been performing well, but have much more often than not missed championships by failing in the crucial stages. Some locals jokingly attributed this to the “Curse of Billy Penn.” Philadelphia fans have known joy and heartache, anger and exultation in their hundred-plus years of living with professional sports teams. “Philadelphia is the most sophisticated, knowledgeable sports town in America. The fans don’t expect you to win all the time, but they demand you play hard,” Philadelphia fans have known joy and heartache, anger and exultation in their hundred-plus years of living with professional sports teams. Such is the fate of all Philadelphia sports fans. Dedication being interpreted as violence, consideration seen as obnoxiousness and love and devotion portrayed as heckling. The media shuns us, other cities fans call us barbaric and rival teams hate playing here. Love it or hate it, we re the best fans in the world. Philadelphia sports fans have consistently upheld a reputation for their diehard attitudes and questionable, yet newsworthy actions when expressing their dedication. There are the unruly Phillies fans, the aggressive and drunk fans both tout questionable reputations throughout any given season. Their actions are undeniably entertaining and generally inappropriate, but their loyalties remain consistent. So in the end, we love them for that. However, Eagles fans have always seemed to be a breed of their own. Infamously known as Philly Pfanactics. In 1978, the team introduced a new mascot, the PhillY Phanatic, who has been called “baseball’s best mascot”, which has been much more successful and has become closely associated with the marketing of the team. In Phillies fan culture, it is also not unusual to replace an “f” with a “ph” in words, such as the Phillie Phanatic The city’s sole existing Major League Baseball team is the Philadelphia Phillies. Founded in 1883, is the oldest team continuous, one-name, one-city franchise in all of professional American sports. It competes in the National League East and has won the World Series twice, in 1980 and 2008. In 2010, Philly sports fans picked both of the Phillies’ World Series wins as the two greatest moments in Philly sports, picking the 2008 win as the greatest moment. The Eagles have won three NFL titles (1948, 1949, 1960)and are the only NFL team to win back to back championships by shutout (7-0 v. Chicago Cardinals, 1948; 14-0, v. L.A. Rams, 1949). The 1960 Eagles are the only team to defeat the Vince Lombardi-coached Packers in a playoff game. They have made two Super Bowl appearances (in 1980 and 2004), but did not win either Super Bowl. Philly fans have mastered the art and science of tailgating; many arrive as early as daybreak for Sunday games. There are barbecues, pep rallies, live pre-game shows, and yes, plenty of beer for the fans old enough to partake. The stadium’s doors usually open about 2 hours before kickoff, so if you want to see the players warm up, arrive early. You might get lucky and even be able to score an autograph or two.
